35% Playing Technique and Improvement
25% Rehearsal Etiquette & Concert Attendances
15% Theory, History and Musical Literacy
15% Home Practice
10% Sectional Practice
Attendance and Rehearsal Etiquette
Three items are required at every rehearsal, dress rehearsal, and concert, without exception: music, notebook, and a sharpened pencil. Failure to address this component of the course expectations will negatively impact term and final marks.
Attendance at all rehearsals is required in accordance with the Vancouver Technical School attendance policy. If you must be away, please let your teacher know in advance. Be sure to get all markings and notes from someone in your section as soon as you return to school. Failure to attend or chronic lateness will severely and negatively impact term and final marks.
Musical Literacy
These will be opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of musical skills, techniques, and understandings of musical language. Music Literacy is more than just an ability to read music. It is the ability to communicate effectively with other musicians, in musical terms, to describe thoughts, images, and feelings. This will be assessed through in-class discussions and on projects and assignments. The most important aspect of musical literacy is that it will help you move beyond superficial responses to the music you experience.
Musicianship
Demonstrations of Skill (D.O.S for short!) will take place several times over the course of the year. These solo/duet demonstrations will be announced in advance and an evaluation sheet will be distributed. Informally, students are expected to demonstrate ongoing skill development which will be assessed on a constant basis throughout the year.
Performance Expectations
Students are required to be in attendance for concerts in which they are performing. Out of respect for your fellow musicians, students are required to attend the entire concert. This demonstrates a respect and value for the effort of others. Attentive listening at these concerts is also reflected in listening and musicianship assessment. Absence from school concerts is considered equivalent to missing a school examination.
Home Practice Expectations
As a member of the Music Program, each musician is expected to engage in regular home practice. Home practice time is as sacred as home study time. 30 minutes of practice is required between classes. Please ensure that your parents have been made aware of this requirement.

A Quick Guide to Success!
This rubric shows what qualities are desirable to achieve varying degrees of success. This rubric is not a strict evaluation policy, but is intended to help students identify ways to improve grades and personal enjoyment of the class.
Students should be aware that these are only some of the areas of evaluation in a Van Tech music class.
